Death Valley National Park is a place of extremes. From dry lake beds below sea level where the temperatures regularly reach well above 100 degrees, to towering mountains frosted with snow, the diversity of this almost unhospitable place is like no other.
This embroidery pattern depicts one of the well-known areas of the park called Racetrack Playa. Visitors who make the long drive to the playa witness a dry lake bed filled with large rocks that have “mysteriously” moved across the land leaving behind well-worn trails. The mystery was solved years ago, but the intrigue lives on.

Giant trees, soaring mountains, and deep canyons make this tandem set of national parks a must-visit destination. Within the boundaries of the parks lie Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower U.S states, Kings Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in North America, and several groves of giant sequoia trees whose massive girth marks them as some of the world’s largest living things.
I made my first visit to this park, last spring and was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the giant sequoias. As we hiked the winding paths between the towering trees, I captured a photo of my husband dwarfed nearly to the size of an ant while standing next to one of the giant sequoias.
